 |

 |
his
month, in-cites presents a listing of the top 20 scientists who, as of
the latest bimonthly update of Essential Science Indicators ,
attracted the highest total citations to their papers published in
Thomson Scientific-indexed journals of Psychiatry & Psychology
over the past 10 years. These names are the top 20 out of a pool of
1,964 scientists comprising the top 1% ranked by total citation count
in this field.
Leading the way is Harvard Medical School’s Ronald
C. Kessler, with 116 papers cited a total of 6,573 times to date.
Dr. Kessler is no stranger to our lists, having been cited by Science
Watch® as the top author of high-impact papers in
this field for the 1990-8 period, and by in-cites for his 1994 paper,
"Lifetime and 12-month prevalence of DSM-III-R psychiatric
disorders in the United States—results from the National Comorbidity
Study," (Arch. Gen. Psychiat. 51[1]:8-19, Jan. 1994). He
is the principal investigator for the aforementioned study, as well as
director of the World Health Organization’s World Mental Health
Surveys.
Close on Dr. Kessler’s heels is his colleague, Joseph
Biederman, who has 214 papers cited a total of 5,871 times to
date. Dr. Biederman’s research focus is on ADD/ADHD,
and he was named by Special Topics in 2005 as the most-cited
researcher in this area. Dr. Biederman is a Professor of Psychiatry at
Harvard Medical School and Chief of the Clinical and Research Program
in Pediatric Psychopharmacology at Massachusetts General Hospital in
Boston.
Ranking at #3 is Stephen
Faraone, with 190 papers cited a total of 5,222 times to date. He
was also cited
in our Special Topic on ADD/ADHD last year. Dr. Faraone is Professor
of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences, Director of Medical Genetics
Research, and Head of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry Research at SUNY

Psychiatry: Robin M. Murray, with 153 papers cited a total of 3,879
times to date. His research mainly focuses on the causes of schizophrenia
and bipolar disorder. He was named the #1
schizophrenia researcher in our inaugural Special Topic in 2001.
Susan McElroy from the Psychopharmacology Research Program of the
University of Cincinnati College of Medicine ranks at #7, with 114
papers cited a total of 3,755 times to date. Dr. McElroy is a
