Between 2002 and 2006,
Thomson Scientific indexed 38,914 papers that listed at least one author
address in Finland. Of those papers, the highest percentage appeared in
journals classified under the heading of ecology/environmental sciences,
followed by space science and neurosciences & behavior. As the
right-hand column indicates, the citations-per-paper average (or impact)
for ecology papers from Finland during the five-year period surpassed
the world average by 32% (4.98 cites per paper for Finland, versus the
world baseline of 3.76 cites per paper). Relative-impact scores for
Finland were also notably strong in agricultural sciences (57% above the
world average), physics (51% above), and clinical medicine (+41%). In
two fields, the impact of papers by Finland-based researchers happened
to match the world mark precisely: molecular biology & genetics (12.19
cites per paper) and materials science (2.65 cites).
