Between 2002 and 2006,
Thomson Scientific indexed 242,445 papers that listed at least one
author address in France. Of those papers, the highest percentage
appeared in journals classified in the field of mathematics. As the
right-hand column shows, the citations-per-paper average for mathematics
papers from France was 16% above the world average for the field (1.59
cites per paper for France versus 1.37 for the world). The performance
of France-based researchers was also strong in plant & animal sciences
(40% above the world mark), agricultural sciences (+23%), and
geosciences (+20%). In molecular biology & genetics, the nation's
relative-impact score happened to match the world mark precisely: 12.19
citations per paper.
