Science in Canada, 2002-06
Canada's world share of
science and social-science papers over the last five years, expressed as
a percentage of papers in each of 22 fields in the Thomson Scientific
database. Also, Canada's relative citation impact compared to the world
average in each field, in percentage terms.

Between 2002 and 2006,
Thomson Scientific indexed 188,856 papers that listed at least one
author address in Canada. Of those papers, the highest percentage
appeared in journals classified under the heading of
psychology/psychiatry, followed by geosciences and ecology/environmental
sciences. As the right-hand column shows, the citations-per-paper
average for psychology/psychiatry papers from Canada was 7% above the
world average in the field (4.04 cites per paper for Canada versus 3.77
cites for the world). In 21 of the 22 of the fields here (excepting
economics & business), the impact of Canadian research met or exceeded
the world average, with particularly strong performance in space science
(57% above the world average), clinical medicine (34% above), and
physics (+31%). In two fields, Canada's relative-impact scores happened
to match the world mark precisely: general social sciences (2.07 cites
per paper), and materials science (2.64 cites).
