Science in Ireland, 2001-05
Ireland's world share of science and social-science papers over a
recent five-year period, expressed as a percentage of papers in each of
21 fields in the Thomson Scientific database. Also, Ireland's citation
impact compared to the world average in each field, in percentage terms.

Between 2001 and 2005, Thomson Scientific indexed 15,575 papers that
listed at least one author address in Ireland. Of those papers, the
highest percentage appeared in journals categorized under the heading of
agricultural sciences. As the right-hand column shows, the
citations-per-paper figure for agricultural-sciences reports from
Ireland exceeded the world average by 33% (3.41 citations per paper for
Ireland versus a world mark of 2.57 citations). And in molecular biology
& genetics, despite a comparatively low percentage of contribution as
reflected in the Thomson database (just 337 papers), the nation's
relative-impact score was strikingly high at +118%, thanks to the
participation of Ireland-based researchers in a few very highly cited
reports, notably a 2001 Nature paper reporting the initial sequencing
and analysis of the human genome. Ireland also scored well in relative
impact in geosciences (+28%), immunology (+26%), and computer science
(+25%).
