Beginning in mid-February 2008, the 1997-2007 online version of the Science Watch® newsletter, ESI-Topics.com, and in-cites.com, will all be featured together on the redesigned ScienceWatch.com. All previous content from the three sites will be permanently archived, and remain accessible from any existing bookmarks to the archived pages. No new content will be added to this site. Updates and new content (updated biweekly) are available at ScienceWatch.com now.

Science in Japan, 2002-06

Japan's world share of science and social-science papers over the last five years, expressed as a percentage of papers in each of 21 fields in the Thomson Scientific database. Also, Japan's relative citation impact compared to the world average in each field, in percentage terms.

Between 2002 and 2006, Thomson Scientific indexed 360,393 papers that listed at least one author address in Japan. Of those papers, the highest percentage appeared in journals classified under the heading of materials science, followed closely by physics. As the right-hand column indicates, the impact of Japanese materials-science research happened to match the world average precisely, at 2.65 cites per paper. In physics, meanwhile, Japan scored at just 1% below the world mark (3.74 cites per paper for Japan versus 3.77 for the world). Japan's scores were notably strong in space science (16% above the world mark) and immunology (+10%). And in two fields in addition to physics, Japan's impact was an even match with the world score: chemistry (4.53 cites per paper) and plant & animal sciences (3.07 cites).
