Between 2001 and 2005, Thomson Scientific indexed 24,185 papers that listed at least one author address in Singapore. Of those papers, the highest percentage appeared in journals categorized under the heading of computer science, followed by engineering. As the right-hand column indicates, the impact (or average citations per paper) of computer-science papers from Singapore was 26% below the average in the field during the five-year period (1.11 cites per paper for Singapore versus the world average of 1.51 citations). In engineering, meanwhile, the impact of papers from Singapore-based researchers was at 98% of the world average, or just 2% below. And in materials science, the nation's impact exceeded the world mark (4% above), as was the case in mathematics (+22%), pharmacology (+5%), plant & animal sciences (+17%), and especially in agricultural sciences (+32%).
