Between 2001 and 2005, Thomson Scientific indexed 38,148 papers that listed at least one author address in Finland. Of those papers, the highest percentage appeared in journals classified under the heading of ecology/environmental sciences, followed by space science and neurosciences & behavior. As the right-hand column indicates, the citations-per-paper average (or impact) for ecology papers from Finland during the five-year period surpassed the world average by 31% (4.70 cites per paper for Finland, versus the world baseline of 3.59 cites per paper). Farther down the list, Finland also showed citation strength in clinical medicine (44% above the world average), physics (42% above), geosciences (+35%), and, most notably, in agricultural sciences (+72%).
