Between 2001 and 2005, Thomson Scientific indexed 238,745 papers that listed at least one author address in France. Of those papers, the highest percentage appeared in journals classified in the field of mathematics. As the right-hand column shows, the citations-per-paper average for mathematics papers from France was 17% above the world average for the field (1.54 cites per paper for France versus 1.32 for the world). Research from France-based authors also scored well in the physical-sciences fields just behind mathematics at the top of the list: space science (10% above the world mark), geosciences (+21%), and physics (+17%). Farther down the list, the performance of French researchers was also notably strong in agricultural sciences (+25%) and plant & animal sciences (+34%).
