Between 2000 and 2004, Thomson Scientific indexed 56,468 papers that listed at least one author address in Taiwan. Of those papers, the highest percentage appeared in journals classified under the heading of computer science, followed by engineering and materials science. In the latter field, as the right-hand column shows, the impact of Taiwanese research in materials registered 17% below the world average (1.92 cites per paper for Taiwan, versus a world average of 2.30 cites per paper). Although the impact of research from Taiwan-based authors has yet to attain the world average in
most of the fields shown, there were some bright spots, including agricultural sciences, in which Taiwanese impact was 9% above the world mark, and mathematics, where Taiwan's score happened to match the world average exactly (1.29 cites per paper).
