Between 2000 and 2004, Thomson Scientific indexed 81,057 papers that listed at least one author address in South Korea. Of those papers, the highest percentage appeared in journals indexed in the category of materials science. Materials research, in fact, as the right-hand column indicates, is the field in which South Korea's citations-per-paper average compared most favorably with the world average, at just 1% below (2.28 cites per paper for South Korea, versus the world figure of 2.30 cites). Although not yet attaining the world mark in any of the fields shown here, South Korean performance was also comparatively strong in physics, chemistry, and plant & animal sciences.
