Between 2001 and 2005, Thomson Scientific indexed 73,179 papers that listed at least one author address in Switzerland. Of those papers, the highest percentage appeared in journals classified under the heading of immunology. As the right-hand column shows, the citations-per-paper average for immunology research from Switzerland exceeded the world average by 34% (14.22 citations per paper for Switzerland, versus 10.62 for the world). In only one field, psychology/psychiatry, did Swiss researchers fail to exceed the world average. The impact of research from authors based in Switzerland was especially strong in engineering (60% above the world average), pharmacology (also 60% above), geosciences (+59%), and, most notably, physics (+83%).
