Between 2000 and 2004, Thomson Scientific indexed 175,522 papers that each listed at least one author address in the People's Republic of China. Of those papers, the highest percentage appeared in journals classified under the heading of materials science, followed by physics and mathematics. As the right-hand column shows, the citations-per-paper score for materials-sciences papers from researchers in China was 22% below the world average in the field (1.80 citations per paper for China, versus a world average of 2.30 citations per paper). Although the citation impact of papers from researchers
based in China has not yet reached the world average in any of the fields shown, the country made comparatively strong showings in mathematics (just 16% below the world average), economics & business (10% below), and agricultural sciences (-17%).
