Between 2000 and 2004, Thomson Scientific indexed 353,540 papers that listed at least one author address in Japan. Of those papers, the highest percentage appeared in journals classified under the heading of materials science, followed closely by physics. As the right-hand column indicates, the impact of Japanese materials-science research was 4% above the world average in the field (2.40 cites per paper for Japan versus 2.30 cites for the world). Relative-impact performance was also comparatively strong in immunology (5% above the world mark) and space science (3% above). In both chemistry and physics, Japanese papers scored at just 1% below the world average.
