Beginning in mid-February 2008, the 1997-2007 online version of the Science Watch® newsletter, ESI-Topics.com, and in-cites.com, will all be featured together on the redesigned ScienceWatch.com. All previous content from the three sites will be permanently archived, and remain accessible from any existing bookmarks to the archived pages. No new content will be added to this site. Updates and new content (updated biweekly) are available at ScienceWatch.com now.

Hot Paper in Physics

"Architecture of the photosynthetic oxygen-evolving center," by Kristina N. Ferreira and 4 others, Science, 303(5665): 1831-8, 19 March 2004.

[Authors' affiliations: Imperial College, London, U.K.; ERATO, Japan Science and Technology Corporation, Nagatsuta]

Abstract: "Photosynthesis uses light energy to drive the oxidation of water at an oxygen-evolving catalytic site within photosystem II ( PSII). We report the structure of PSII of the cyanobacterium Thermosynechococcus elongatus at 3.5 angstrom resolution. We have assigned most of the amino acid residues of this 650-kilodalton dimeric multisubunit complex and refined the structure to reveal its molecular architecture. Consequently, we are able to describe details of the binding sites for cofactors and propose a structure of the oxygen-evolving center (OEC). The data strongly suggest that the OEC contains a cubane-like Mn3CaO4 cluster linked to a fourth Mn by a mono-mu-oxo bridge. The details of the surrounding coordination sphere of the metal cluster and the implications for a possible oxygen-evolving mechanism are discussed."

This 2004 report from Science was cited 43 times in current journal articles indexed by Thomson Scientific during July-August 2005. Only one other biology paper published in the last two years, aside from reviews, attracted a greater number of citations during that two-month period. Prior to the most recent bimonthly tally, citations to the paper have accrued as follows:

May-June 2005: 34 citations
March-April 2005: 22
January-February 2005: 36
November-December 2004: 37
September-October 2004:
13
July-August 2004: 10
May-June 2004: 4
March-April 2004: 1

Total citations to date: 200

SOURCE: Hot Papers Database (Included with a subscription to the ISI print newsletter Science Watch®, available from the ISI Research Services Group. Packaged on a CD-ROM that is mailed with each Science Watch issue, the Hot Papers Database contains data on hundreds of highly cited papers published during the last two years. User interface permits searching by author, organization, journal, field, and more. Total citations, as well as citations accrued during successive bimonthly periods, can be assessed and graphed. An updated CD containing the most recent bimonthly data is mailed with every new issue of Science Watch, six times a year. The CD also includes an electronic version of the Science Watch issue in HTML format, for personal desktop access.)
