Russian Science, 2000-04

Russia's world share of science and social-science papers over a recent five-year period, expressed as a percentage of papers in each of 21 fields in the Thomson Scientific database. Also, Russia's relative citation impact compared to the world average in each field, in percentage terms.

Between 2000 and 2004, Thomson Scientific indexed 122,182 papers that listed at least one author address in Russia. Of those papers, the highest percentage appeared in journals categorized under the heading of physics. As the right-hand column shows, the citations-per-paper (impact) average for physics papers from Russia during 2000-04 was 23% below the world impact figure in that field (2.79 citations per paper for Russia, versus a world figure of 3.64 cites per paper). Although the impact of Russian research has yet to attain the world average in any of the fields shown, the nation showed comparative strength in physics, mathematics, engineering, pharmacology, and economics & business.
