Between 2000 and 2004, Thomson Scientific indexed 37,226 papers that listed at least one author address in Austria. Of those, the highest percentage appeared in journals classified under the heading of clinical medicine, followed closely by immunology. As the right-hand column shows, the citations-per-paper score for clinical-medicine papers from Austria was 4% above the world average(5.29 citations per paper for Austria, versus the world baseline of 5.10 citations). Austria's performance was notably strong in molecular biology & genetics (40% above the world mark), physics (+46%), mathematics (+26%), and materials science (+24%).
