Science in Canada

Canada's world share of science and social-science papers over the last five years, expressed as a percentage of papers in each of 21 fields in the Thomson Scientific database. Also, Canada's relative citation impact compared to the world average in each field, in percentage terms.

Between 2000 and 2004, Thomson Scientific indexed 169,385 papers that listed at least one author address in Canada. Of those papers, the highest percentage appeared in journals classified in the field of geosciences, followed by psychology/psychiatry and ecology/environmental sciences. As the right-hand column shows, the citations-per-paper average for geosciences papers from Canada was 6% above the world average in the field (3.59 cites per paper for Canada versus 3.38 cites for the world). The impact of Canadian research exceeded the world average in all but two of the fields shown here, with particularly impressive performance in fields in which Canada's representation in the database was below its 4.49% overall share; these included space science (55% above the world mark), clinical medicine (38% above), and physics (+38%).
