Between 1999 and 2003, Thomson ISI indexed 353,657 papers that listed at least one author address in Japan. Of those papers, the highest percentage appeared in journals classified under the heading of materials science. As the right-hand column indicates, the impact of Japanese materials-science research was 2% above the world mark in the field (2.25 cites per paper for Japan versus 2.21 cites for the world). Relative-impact performance was also comparatively strong in physics (95% of the world mark, or just 5% below), chemistry (97% of the world score), and plant & animal sciences (94% of the world mark, or just 6% below). In immunology, Japan's impact figure happened to match the world mark: 10.22 cites per paper.
