Between 1998 and 2002, ISI indexed 18,152 papers that listed at least one author address in South Africa. Of those papers, the highest percentage appeared in journals classified under the heading of plant & animal sciences. As the right-hand column shows, the citations-per-paper average for South African research in plant & animal sciences was 35% below the world mark for that field (1.76 cites per paper for South Africa, versus the world average of 2.72 cites per paper). While the relative impact of South African research has yet to attain the world average in any of the fields shown, performance was comparatively strong in immunology, agricultural sciences, materials science, and social sciences.
