Between 1998 and 2002, ISI indexed 334,676 papers that listed at least one author address in a United Kingdom nation (England, Scotland, Wales, and Northern Ireland). Of those papers, the highest percentage appeared in journals classified under the heading of education, followed by economics & business. As the right-hand column indicates, the citations-per-paper average for U.K. research in education was just 5% below the world average (0.91 cites per paper for the U.K. versus 0.96 for the world). Nevertheless, aside from scoring just shy of the world impact average in two other social-science fields (economics & business and general social sciences), U.K. researchers surpassed the world mark in all of the scientific fields shown here--by the most notable margins in plant & animal sciences (+50% above the world average), pharmacology (44% above), and agricultural sciences (+46%).
