Between 1998 and 2002, Thomson ISI indexed 150,417 papers that listed at least one author address in Italy. Of these papers, the highest percentage appeared in journals classified under the heading of space science, followed by mathematics and computer science. As the right-hand column shows, the citations-per-paper average for space-science papers
from Italy was 18% above the world average in the field (9.08 cites per paper for Italy, versus the world mark of 7.72 cites per paper). The nation also scored well in physical-sciences fields such as physics (24% above the world mark), computer science (8% above), chemistry (+6%), and engineering (+13%). In immunology, Italy's impact mark happened to match the world figure precisely: 9.96 cites per paper.
