Between 1998 and 2002, ISI indexed 35,259 papers that listed at least one author address in Finland. Of those papers, the highest percentage appeared in journals classified under the heading of ecology/environmental sciences, followed by neurosciences and space science. As the right-hand column indicates, the citations-per-paper average (or impact) for ecology papers from Finland during the five-year period surpassed the world average by 25% (3.90 cites per paper for Finland, versus the world baseline of 3.12 cites per paper). Farther down the list, Finland also showed citation strength in clinical medicine (39% above the world average) and especially in agricultural sciences (+70%).
