Between 1998 and 2002 Thomson ISI indexed 23,202 papers that listed at least one author address in Mexico. Of those papers, the highest percentage appeared in journals indexed in the category of space sciences. As the right-hand column shows, the citations-per-paper average, or impact, of space-science papers from Mexico was 9% below the world average (7.05 cites per paper for Mexico versus 7.72 citations for the world). Although the impact of Mexican research registered below the world average in all the fields shown above (those fields in which Mexico published at least 150 papers in Thomson ISI-indexed journals during the five-year period), space science, environment/ecology, agricultural sciences, materials science, and engineering proved to be areas of comparatively strong performance.
