Between 1995 and 1999, ISI indexed 320,452 papers listing at least one author address in a United Kingdom nation (England, Wales, Northern Ireland, and Scotland). Of those papers, the highest percentage appeared in journals classified under the heading of economics & business. As the right-hand column indicates, the citations-per-paper average for U.K. research in economics was 8% below the world average (1.46 cites per paper for the U.K. versus 1.59 for the world). Nevertheless, U.K. researchers surpassed the world impact average in most of the fields
above—by the greatest margins in pharmacology (51% above), plant & animal sciences (+43%), and agricultural sciences (+41%).
