The Most-Cited Institutions in
Neuroscience & Behavior, 1997-2007

This month, in-cites presents a listing of the top 20 institutions which, as of the second bimonthly update of is  Essential Science Indicators (1997-April 30, 2007), attracted the highest total citations to their papers published in Thomson Scientific-indexed Neuroscience & Behavior journals. These institutions are the top 20 out of a pool of 385 institutions comprising the top 1% ranked by total citation count in this field.

The Neuroscience & Behavior field includes journals that cover the following topics:

  • cellular and molecular neuroscience
  • neuronal development
  • basic and clinical neurology
  • psychopharmacology
  • biobehavioral psychology
  • molecular psychology
  • neuronal function underlying higher cognitive processes

The top 20 institutions in this field are dominated by US-based universities, hospitals, and government-supported Dennis Selkoeinstitutions. First among the US institutions is Harvard University, with 5,840 papers cited a total of 186,868 times to date. Harvard’s papers in Neuroscience & Behavior are on such topics as face perception, the RAS-MAPK signal pathway, and apoptosis in the nervous system. There are also several papers on various aspects of Alzheimer’s disease, including three by Dennis Selkoe, David Gintywho once spoke with us about his work related to our Special Topic on Alzheimer’s disease.

Johns Hopkins University ranks at #2, with 3,909 papers cited a total of 111,844 times to date. Alzheimer’s is also a focus at Johns Hopkins, as are the intricacies of the relationships between proteins and receptors. There are three New Hot Paper authors among the top 20 papers: Valina Dawson, Frederick Nucifora, Jr., and David Ginty.

The #3 institution in Neuroscience & Behavior is the University of California, San Francisco, with 2,836 papers cited a total of 98,750 times to date. Michael Caterina’s work on the capsaicin receptor makes a good showing, with four papers in the top 20. Michael CaterinaOther topics undertaken by UCSF include dentate granule cell neurogenesis, neurotrophins, and diagnostic criteria for multiple sclerosis.

Ranked at #4 is Yale University, with 3,118 papers cited a total of 92,359 times to date. Research includes papers on hypocretin, the molecular and cellular basis of addiction, and the role of chronic antidepressant administration in neurogenesis.

The Max Planck Society is the first of the European institutions, and the only one in the top 10, with 3,245 papers cited a total of 89,610 times to date. The Society’s highly cited papers in this field cover such topics as synaptic efficiency, speech production, and GABA(B)-receptor subtypes. Other European institutions in the top 20 include University College London at #11 (3,235 papers with 78,314 total citations) and the Karolinska Institute at #20 (3,011 papers cited a total of 56,784 times to date).

The University of California, San Francisco, is joined in the top 20 by three other California institutions: the University of California, Los Angeles, at #6 (3,694 papers cited a total of 84,922 times to date), the University of California, San Diego, at #8 (2,888 papers cited a total of 82,767 times to date), and Stanford University at #14 (2,272 papers with 71,270 total citations). Two of the US institutions in the top 20 hail from Pennsylvania: the University of Pennsylvania at #13 (3,056 papers cited a total of 72,683 times to date) and the University of Pittsburgh at #16 (2,703 papers with 71,270 total citations).

Canada’s McGill University enters the rankings at #15, with 2,980 papers garnering a total of 69,911 citations.End
