"A well-articulated research ethic that affirms the value of
research, both to the advancement of knowledge and the maintenance of
quality education, and a process to promote, recognize, and reward
research accomplishments are key factors contributing to our increased
citations," said Dr. M. Moshe Porat, dean
of
The Fox School of Business and Management at Temple University.
Porat explained that The Fox School supports its research
initiatives by reducing teaching loads for research-active faculty and
by committing monetary incentives for research. Rewards are
established for research accomplishments: Senior faculty who
contribute to The Fox School’s research reputation at the highest
level are invited to become members of The Research Roundtable; the
best and most productive junior researchers are named to the Research
Fellows program which provides monetary support and
recognition; and both senior and junior faculty are recognized each
year in the annual Research Honor Roll. Annual merit awards further
reward research published in top-tier journals.
Additionally, The Fox School has established a number of
cross-disciplinary institutes and centers. The work from these
institutes and centers help to focus research on timely, relevant
contemporary issues; provide additional support for research activity;
and promote cross-fertilization of ideas among business disciplines as
well as among disciplines outside of business.
According to Porat, the national refereed academic journals under
the lead editorship of Fox faculty also contribute to the school’s
reputation as an important research institution. These publications
now include the Journal of Economics and Business, the Journal
of International Management, the Risk and Insurance Review,
Benefits Quarterly, The Financier, and The
Securitization Conduit.
To support and grow its research reputation, Dean Porat said that
more than 20 new faculty members who publish in top-tier journals have
recently been added to The Fox School and its affiliated School of
Tourism and Hospitality Management. These new appointments are
generating new opportunities for collaborative research and motivating
others to seek higher levels of research achievement, Porat said.
Combined, these initiatives create an environment that fosters and
rewards research which can be published in top-tier publications,
resulting in increased research output and citations, which thereby
increases the stature of The Fox School to academic and business
communities.
