Jane and Leland Stanford established the 1university in memory of their only child, Leland Jr., who died of typhoid fever at 15. On Oct. 1, 1891, Stanford University opened its doors after six years of planning and building. According to the ISI Essential Science Indicators database, today Stanford ranks #4 for total citations (867,106), and #14 for papers (42,520) among the 3,473 top-performing institutions across all fields. "Die Luft der Freiheit weht" is Stanford’s unofficial motto and translates as "the wind of freedom blows." In this expanded profile, we look at field rankings for  Stanford on three separate measures.

2Stanford's Schools Include:

  • School of Medicine is the oldest medical school in the western United States.

  • Law School offers the first professional degree in law (J.D.), which constitutes preparation for Stanford Seal the practice of law.

  • School of Humanities and Sciences is Stanford’s largest school, awarding nearly 80 percent of Stanford undergraduate degrees and about 48 percent of doctoral degrees.

  • School of Engineering has nearly one-quarter of all Stanford students enrolled.

  • School of Education offers the following degrees: Doctorate (Ph.D. and Ed.D.), Master of Arts and Master of Arts with teaching or administrative credential.

  • School of Earth Sciences has three academic departments, each offering undergraduate and graduate programs: Geological and Environmental Sciences, Geophysics and Petroleum Engineering

  • Graduate School of Business educates students for careers in management, research and teaching.
