ane and Leland Stanford established the 1university in memory of their only child, Leland Jr., who died of typhoid fever at 15. On Oct. 1, 1891, Stanford University opened its doors after six years of planning and building. According to the ISI Essential Science Indicators database, today Stanford ranks #4 for total citations (867,106), and #14 for papers (42,520) among the 3,473 top-performing institutions across all fields.
