month, in-cites presents a listing of the top 20 institutions
which, as of the third bimonthly update of the ISI
Essential
Science Indicators
Web product, attracted the highest total citations to their
papers published in ISI-indexed journals of Agricultural
Sciences over the last 10 years (January 1, 1994-June 30,
2004). These institutions are the top 20 out of a pool of 298
institutions comprising the top 1% ranked by total citation
count in this field.

agriculture, agricultural chemistry, and agronomy journals containing:

The top 20 institutions in Agricultural Sciences are a blend of
large universities and government agencies from all over the world.
Leading the way by over 17,000 citations is the United States
Department of Agriculture (USDA), with 6,498 papers cited a total of
38,877 times to date. Some of the highly cited research coming out of
the USDA includes antioxidants, soybean genetics, and E. coli
in beef products.
France is represented by the Institut National de la Recherche
Agronomique (INRA) in the #2 slot, with 3,041 papers cited a total of
21,070 times to date on such diverse topics as food microbiology,
organic matter distributions in soil, animal dietary fat, and dietary
polyphenols. The #3 slot belongs to Wageningen University in the
Netherlands, with 2,214 papers cited a total of 13,996 times to date.
Wageningen’s highly cited work covers such topics as reactive
oxidative species and probiotics. The University of California, Davis
comes in at #4 with 1,668 papers cited a total of 12,889 times to
date. Among UC Davis’s highly cited work is Dr.
Edwin Frankel’s research on the antioxidant properties of wines.
Spain’s Consejo Superior de Investigaciones Científicas (CSIC)
rounds out the top 5, with 2,213 papers cited a total of 12,224 times
to date. CSIC’s highly cited research encompasses a wide variety of
topics from phenolic compounds in olive oil to species identification
in seafood products.
Australia, Canada, and England all have representatives in the top
20 Agricultural Sciences institutions list as well. Australia’s
Commonwealth Scientific & Industrial Research Organisation (CSIRO)
ranks at #6 with 1,622 papers cited 11,552 times to date. Agriculture
and Agrifood Canada and the University of Guelph are ranked at #8 and
#13, respectively. England is represented by the University of Reading
at #20.
