the interview below, in-cites talks with Dr. Angelo DeNisi,
Dean of Tulane University’s A.B. Freeman School of Business,
about the institution’s citation record in the field of
Economics & Business. According to an Essential Science Indicators
analysis published in April, Tulane reached the top 1% of
institutions in this field, with 230 papers cited a total of
1,266 times. Founded in 1914 as the Tulane University College of
Commerce and Business Administration and renamed to honor
philanthropist Alfred Bird Freeman in 1984, the Freeman School
is the first and to date only nationally ranked business
school in the Gulf South. Dr. DeNisi was appointed to the
position of Dean in 2005.

How do you account for Tulane’s
increase in the number of citations in the field of Economics &
Business in recent years?
We have been building and developing a strong research faculty
for the past five to seven years. Those efforts have only just now
reached a meaningful threshold in terms of payoff. There is nothing
sudden about this increase.
Does this reflect a deliberate plan to enhance Tulane’s
research effort in this field, or was this an unexpected or
serendipitous development?

Since we have been working on getting stronger on the research
side, this is exactly the kind of thing we were hoping for when we
started.
Are there specific areas of research within the realm of
Economics & Business on which Tulane particularly focuses?
Not really. We have several people in Organizational Behavior
working on justice and unethical behavior, and we have a number of
theoretical finance professors, but these are all individual efforts
and not part of some concerted effort to develop certain areas.
What
research fields or capabilities do you see as critical for the future
of Tulane?
Our strengths have been Organizational Behavior and Finance. We
are trying to develop strengths in Accounting, Consumer Behavior,
and Strategy as well. Where we have been successful it has been
because there was core of research-active faculty and at least one
senior person who could develop his/her junior colleagues.
What effect has Hurricane Katrina had on the department’s
activities?
Katrina resulted in our faculty being scattered around the US for
the entire Fall semester. The financial impact of Katrina upon the
University has led to a reduction in research budgets for faculty
(although we have been able to support professional travel as well
as we had before).Yet, Katrina also meant that all our faculty spent
the Fall semester, on full pay, without teaching responsibilities.
Many of the faculty were able to use that time to do a lot of
writing.
Were the consequences/challenges for Economics & Business notably
different (better? worse?) compared with the broader campus community?
The A.B. Freeman School of Business was left with a strong
financial position thanks to my predecessor as Dean. Thus we were
better able to function than were a lot of other units on the
campus. Also, our staff are truly devoted to helping students and so
they were able to make this transitional time much better for our
students than for many other Tulane students.
To what extent have the economic and commercial aspects of the Katrina
disaster become topics of formal academic study by Tulane researchers,
and is such study likely to intensify?
Interesting question. We just completed a "Management in
Action" module for our MBA students that focused on rebuilding
New Orleans. Tulane has mandated a service learning requirement for
ALL our students, and we are beginning a fellowship program for MBA
graduates (from here and other schools) who want to come here and
help rebuild the city.
