England's world share of science and social science papers over a recent five-year period, expressed as a percentage of papers in each of 22 fields in the ISI® database. Also, England's relative citation impact compared to the world average in each field, in percentage terms. These data pertain to England alone and do not include Scotland, Wales, or Northern Ireland.

Between 1996 and 2000, ISI indexed 278,418 papers that each listed at least one author address in England. Of those papers, the highest percentage appeared in journals classified under the heading of economics & business, followed closely by education, space science, and social sciences. As the right-hand column shows, the citations-per-paper score for economics papers from English researchers was 3% below the world average in (0.91 citations per paper for England, versus a world baseline of 0.98 citations). Nevertheless, in all but three of the fields shown, papers from England exceeded the world impact average, with particularly strong performance in pharmacology, agricultural sciences, and plant & animal sciences.End of interview
