Average Citation Rates The Average Citation Rates page displays data on the average citation rates of papers within the scientific fields over each of the past 10 years. The calculation is number of citations / number of papers, where papers is defined as regular scientific articles, review articles, proceedings papers, and research notes. How to read this table: The Average Citation Rates table lists all the scientific fields in rows, as well as an "All Fields" row combining all data. Data for the average citation rates are given for the last 10 years, with the "All Years" column using all data for those years. See the picture below. A value of 11.25, for instance, in the field of Molecular Biology & Genetics in 1997 indicates that the average paper in that year has since been cited 11.25 times. Note that all papers from all the journals covered in ISI's database are used in the average citation rates calculation -- not just the papers chosen for inclusion in ISI Essential Science Indicators Web product.
